If you are just starting out in blogging it won’t be long before you hear the name “Wordpress”. But what is it? Wordpress is a free and open source blogging application. Wordpress comes in two different guises. The first is the Wordpress.org software which you download and install on your web server and so create a dedicated blog web site (the Blogging and… website is an example of this). To do this you will need web hosting with PHP and MySQL. Wordpress have a handy guide to help you install it.

The other variation is to get a free Wordpress blog at Wordpress.com. The .com version of the Wordpress is a blog hosting service. You sign up by completing the simple form and they will give you free blog hosted under the wordpress.com domain, something like myusername.wordpress.com.

The first thing you need to start blogging is a blog! There are several different ways to get blogs, some cost money and some are free. Today we will look at getting a FREE blog at blogger.com

Blogger is a free blogging service run by Google. To create a new blog go to http://www.blogger.com from there you can create a new blog which will be hosted by Google at subdomains of blogspot.com.

At blogger.com click on the bright orange sign which says “create a blog”. It is just 3 easy steps now to create your blog.

1. Create a Google Account

Blogger is owned and run by Google, so to acccess it you need a google account. By creating a Google account you also get access to other Google services. If you already have a Google account perhaps from Gmail, Google Groups, or Orkut, you should sign in rather than create a new account, to do that click “sign in first”.

To create your account fill in the form making sure you complete the word verification correctly and accept the terms of service.

2. Name your blog
The next step is to give you blog a name. The name or title is really part of your blogs branding. The first thing to note is that the title needs to reflect the nature of the blog. If you want to write about games consoles you don’t want to call you blog “Fluffy’s Day Out”. Another thing to remember is spelling, don’t spell the blog name wrong, it looks bad and nobody will be able to find it using a search engine. You should also try to make the blog title as catchy as possible.

After you have named you blog you need to choose the URL that will be used by visitors to access your blog. The URL will have the format

http://myblog.blogspot.com/

Since there are already a large number of blogger.com blogs, you’ll need to get creative and possibly try a few different ones before you find one that’s available. Use the check availability link to see if the name you want is free.

One thing to note when selecting your blog’s URL is that dashes are the only non-alphanumeric characters allowed. Spaces aren’t permitted, nor are underscores (_) or any other special characters.

3. Choose a template

You can now choose a custom look for your blog. Scroll through the list and see what theme you like. You can preview it by clicking on the “preview template” link. You can easily change the template later, or even create your own custom template design once your blog is set up. Once you have picked you template click on “Continue”.

Your blog has been created! Google create your blog straight away so you can start blogging immediately. To start click on the “start blogging” arrow.
